Why is appearance so important?

You are looking for a new job because the one you have doesn’t offer you the challenges you wish or because there is no way to be promoted.

You apply for a position in a company.

The person who calls you works for a staff selection company and has been hired by the company to make a first selection among the applications received.

You use your lunch time to go to the interview (you catch a taxi to arrive as soon as possible).

It’s summer. It’s hot.

You wear a blouse, the trousers of a suit but obviously not the jacket because of the high temperature (you don’t want to arrive sweatening).

You arrive on time, even before the agreed time and you wait for the interviewer.

After greeting you and talking a little bit, the interviewer tells you that if the position you are applying for was in a formal company, you would have been rejected because you are not wearing a suit!

Excuse me? I’m sorry but I cannot understand it 100 %… and even more if the application is for a job not facing the public or customers.

Does my appearance mean that I know more or less ?, that I can be more or less proactive (as requested) ?, that I will do better or worse the job ?,…

Does the fact that I did not wear the jacket because of the temperature mean that I will not fit the job?, that I will not have the knowledge to do it perfectly?

Why do people give so much importance to the appearance, to the cover, to superficiality? I cannot conceive this so common way of thinking.

Sorry, but I think there’s more than his/her clothes in a person, and I also reckon somebody will do better his/her job if he/she feels at ease.
