Last November 7th, American School Way, in collaboration with Pearson, hosted the ELT Conference for the second time. The event took place across Colombia, with Nancy Reeves as the guest of honor.
And for the second time I was a speaker at this Conference.
If last year the general topic was "Active Learning in F2F Teaching and Learning" and I had then chosen to talk about the ways vituality had affected F2F learning processes, this year the general topic was "Empowering Teachers and Learners in the Phygital Learning Era".
In this occasion, I also wanted to use all the personal experience I have had along the years, but also the one that enabled me to develop as a mentor in the process of overcoming cultural shock. Indeed, one of my several tasks in the last year and a half at ASW has been to bring Ambassadors of different nationalities to our branches, and when they arrive, the Colombian way of living sometimes crashes against their own customs.
In addition to the increasing presence of ambassadors from diverse countries with varying customs and cultures, it is noteworthy that a substantial majority, 80%, of English students in Colombia aspire to pursue education abroad or engage in emigration, and digital and physical tools can really help overcoming the shocks.
Having been myself an immigrant in various countries for over 20 years, I decided to share not only my own experience but also those of some Ambassadors who kindly participated in the survey I conducted. I presented the topic "Navigating Culture Shock with Phygital Tools" and the feedback was truly rewarding. I will certainly delve deeper into this area.
